ASUNCION, Paraguay -- Two women let themselves be crucified on wooden crosses and carried around Paraguay's capital on Friday as part of citywide protests demanding President Fernando Lugo grant funds for low-income housing.
Members of various homeless organizations nailed the women's hands and bound their feet to crosses in a plaza to pressure the Social Action Secretariat to give them $1 million to purchase land and build homes.
The women were identified as Laura Raquel Ramirez, 37, and Naida Villaverde, 41. One of them fainted from the heat and pain, said Blas Vera, one of the movement's leaders.
This is what Americans are going to have to do to get real change in this country. All these silly parades we call protests where we march with puppets and goofy signs and we make sure we have enough porta potties and of course we always have a permit. Thats a bunch of crap and a waste of time and energy. We are going to have to spill some blood and burn shit down if we want affordable housing and universal healthcare etc. Sitting behind the computer all day writing about pooties and pie is not working. The meek will inherit the shit as the old bumper sticker goes. The last protest I went to I got arrested. Are you willing to get arrested to get the ruling class to do the right thing?
Pelosi just agreed to use money earmarked for new tech to bailout the american auto industry. Is this worth burning shit down or not?
I'm willing to be nailed to something to get them to pay attention.
What are you willing to do?
